Légion d'Honneur for veterans of RAF No. 624 (Special Duties) Squadron
June 24, 2016
Several members of 624 (SD) Sqn have already received their L.d'H medals, but it was an honour and great pleasure for us to arrange for two of its veterans to be personally awarded theirs by a representative of the French govenment.
At a modest but moving ceremony held at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum (nr Chichester, W. Sussex) Stanley David and Derek Wood were officially presented with their medals by François Jean, the Honorary French Consul for Brighton (Newhaven).
624 (SD) Sqn was based at Blida airfield in Algeria during 1943 and 1944, flying secret operations to supply agents and supplies to resistance groups in southern Europe.
Many thanks to the the museum's Director, Dudley Hooley, and all the wonderful volunteer staff who made it such a great day for all concerned. And special thanks to the RAF's Red Arrows display team who honoured us (albeit unknowingly) with a fly-past directly over Tangmere right after the medal awards ceremony ... they were actually performing for the Goodwood Festival of Speed just down the road!
